Bah, I was waiting for DBUS to do it ;)
(System daemon would have told the gnome application when it was
plugged/unplugged, rather than having the application do it itself).

I've been "debating" it myself with the ACME button which shows if ACME
is running or not. Once it's merged in the gnome-settings-daemon, I'll
remove it.
Rest of the stuff looks alright.
