Tooltips are supposed to be reminders not a primary exploratory device
(that's the menus). And they are "sticky" in any decent implementation
anyway.
The status bar has no visual association with the widget under the
mouse.

Removing the need to save does not mean removing the *ability* to save.
Even Alan Cooper's diatribe in "About Face" recommends keeping the save
item.
