with Pango/Xft2/fontconfig is that all fonts look like Unicode
fonts. So we need to know what encoding to convert from, landing in
Unicode.
Sorry if I'm wrong, but doesn't this apply to more applications than web
browsers and terminals? I can imagine that practically all applications
that work with (plain text) documents or output have to deal with this.
(Not that I know how to solve this, when there are more encodings used
than only Unicode..)
