Well, it's not quite all preferences, it just seems that the 'real'
arguments tend to cancel each other out so we might have to fall back on
preference to make the decision :)  

Those 'real' issues include accessibility (for which right-alignment is
better) and the results of some eye-tracking studies Sun did a while ago
(which favoured left-alignment, but I'm still trying to hunt down any
details that I can share with the list).
