Thanks for the summary, sounds like there's not really a "correct"
answer for any given situation, as is so often the case in UI design...
One of the accessibility people I asked did point out one possible
reason for preferring right-alignment, though-- if somebody is using a
screen magnifier, the label for the focused control is more likely to
show up in the magnifier if the label is right-aligned. (Assuming the
label is on the left of the control).
Other than that, all the other Sun people who've expressed a preference
to me so far are in favour of left-alignment, for the reasons Anna
pointed out. I dunno, maybe it's just something they put in our water
supply here :o)
