Imho poor window lists are one of the main reasons users prefer tabbed
interfaces, who wants to have 30 entries in the window list. In many ways i
think grouping in the gnome2 window list along with multiple desktops can
provide the same ease of use that MDIs provide, while not forcing app
developers to turn every app into a window manager.
I've got to disagree with you there... The problem with the gnome2
window list is that it takes two clicks to pick one specific window out
of a group. You click once to open the group, then find the specific
document, and then click on it. It doesn't seem like much in the grand
scheme of things, but it makes a big difference if you have to do it a
lot. I myself much prefer just clicking on a tab up above the documents
(as shown in the "gedit is like this but shouldn't be" example).
Anyway, my original question still stands: I understand why new users
might not want an MDI, but why not allow it as an option to be turned on
in Preferences?
