I'm no usability expert, but I would like to have my say.  I think that 
in Screenshot #2 it would be better to have the "available options" 
button and alike, above the "selected options" area.  In my opinion it 
makes it easier to understand how to add option the the "selected 
options" area.

Also, do you know if any work has been done on anything along these 
lines as discussed on nautilus-list gnome org ?

I completely agree with this. I would really like to see search reintegrated 
into nautilus instead of having a seperate tool as we currently do. I think 
an ex-eazel employee is hacking on medusa and trying to get it to work with 
gnome2 and nautilus. perhaps we will see this functionality readded in the 
future.
