Actually that would be more of a window manager issue. In the gdm window
manager (on the login screen only:) I have windows have a black rectangle
shadow. That is very simple to add, elthough not entierly pretty. With a
little work it should be nice, however not that you cannot do actual AA so
easy, but a thin black shadow on the focused window might reinforce the idea of
Z order, and would be possible to add now, without waiting for lots of X server
foo to be done. I'm thinking 1-2 pixels black shadow, it should be simple I'd
think to make a sawfish theme to test how it looks and feels. But I've never
done that.
