All this discussion made me experiment with using ~ as my desktop. :)
I kind of like it -- for one thing, it's an encouragement *not* to fill
my home directory full of files (otherwise why did I create a ~/tmp 
directory in the first place, dammit!).

But the immediate problem I notice is that there's no way from the 
desktop to get to any of the options in the "view" menu in window
mode -- "Lay out items by..." and "Zoom" being the ones I most find
myself missing. (Of course what I really want is "snap to grid" for
manual layout. :>

What about Nautilus itself? What happens if I delete ~/Nautilus?
