OK. Are you sure the file is not excluded due to ignore rules it location configuration?
Could you file a bug and include the output of 'tracker status --collect-debug-info'?
I would expect content to be indexed.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the indexing is finished. The result from $
tracker-search status indicates that indexing has been finished.
However, $ tracker-search foo does not find the file either.

Yes, I mean the search that comes up when you press the super key.

is there a way by which to prevent tracker from reindexing gnome

Hmm, Tracker is indexing "activities overview" ?
So, I understand *where* you mean by "activities overview", but I
don't know what it is you think we're indexing or doing from that.
I know Tracker can be used (depending on extensions and GNOME version)
to search for content there, but what content is it that we're
actively *re-indexing* ?
The only thing related, I can think of, is the .desktop files or
"Applications". I shouldn't think we're indexing those continuously on
search from the activities overview.
Perhaps I am missing something, but I don't really know how to help
you without more detail :)
Thanks,
Specifically the content I have in mind is ods files, rather than
applications. Every time I boot the computer, it takes a fair bit of
time before the files I am looking for are found via the search box in
the activities overview (i.e. pressing the super key). It's only after
15 minutes or so that the search comes up with any results (this does
not apply to Applications, which are always found immediately). I hope
this makes sense.
Did the indexing finish before you shutdown last time?
A modern tracker installation will show this using:
$ tracker status
You can also test using Tracker directly with:
$ tracker search foo
(or tracker-search foo with older Tracker versions)
Does the file show up that way?
I wonder if this is just the shell / extension being slow?
