This is something I'm curious about: What were the reasons to start
tracker-extract (and tracker-miner-fs) via XDG autostart files? In the
past IIRC we used D-Bus activation to start those services on-demand.
Only tracker-store itself was started via an XDG autostart file.
As for tracker-extract, now that's an standalone daemon, I just made it
do the same than tracker-miner-fs (and its autostart file was added in
2009 :).
As a more generic "why autorun miners?" question, IMO the problem is
more that there is no central point to start miners. "on demand" doesn't
quite work here because apps generally poke the store, not the miners.
For the specific tracker-extract case it might make sense to have
tracker-miner-fs start tracker-extract (or a watchdog, as martyn says),
but then what does start tracker-miner-fs in a regular session, or any
other miner...
Cheers,
Carlos
