Ok, pushed to master.
Apparently the original bug is not solved with this max_depth
parameter passing. I filed a bug with further comments from downstream
here:

Yup! pretty much :). That should ensure no subdirs go through
traverse_tree_foreach() before they're meant to. Thanks for doing
