As I'm a bit hesitant to compile the current version since it seems
that Ubuntu has made a number of patches on top of the code, I dug a
bit deeper into the 0.8.17 code.
I think patches 01 (upower) and 03 (poppler-0.16) are not needed in
master (those things are solved in our code). Patch 02 is a trivial
ifdef, and 99 is a compilation dark magic patch that you don't need
because you are compiling from scratch. So I think you can try the
repository version without much problems.
[Maybe you need to install vala from the tarball, but is a trivial
./configure && make && sudo make install]
