When calling tracker-extract -f on the file directly, everything is
working fine.

You're not passing the correct MIME type. Although I think
tracker-extract will guess it if you omit that part. not sure.

I just tried passing the MIME type explicitly (application/pdf). Now the
exception is no longer raised, but tracker does not return any plain
text data either (which the command line version prints just fine).
