hi all!
ÂTracker likes information that can be linked with other information, and
this link must be useful for the user! I don't see the raw package database
giving any new interesting new connection... and usually package management
software has strong performance requirements and complex algorythms to run.
ÂBasically i wouldn't use tracker for that unless we find a nice use case
for the user (and not just an engineering convenience). But hey, this is
open source! :)
I think there is some potential. A quick example, PM stores mime-type
data into tracker-store. Abiword requires a plugin to read
document/something mime-type and using tracker can find the pkg and
inform user to install it (or ask user to install it). If there are
more choices available, user can be helped in the selection by showing
ratings (app votes), number of downloads and user comments (all this
possible with Entropy). Of course, it would be nice to abstract this
away using PackageKit, maybe on a second "pass" ;).
As I said, this is just one possible use case and I think this
experiment could bring our mind to undiscovered islands.
Another example, think about OSX Spotlight, it shows installed apps
too... if tracker knows about them, we have the same effect under
GNOME, allowing users to quick search/update/remove applications on
the system.
Moreover, we could use fster to build up a quick App Store fully
integrated into <your-favourite-file-browser>.
I think this is enough for having some fun.

Ivan
