ok, automake version was 1.7 on ubuntu hardy. Installed 1.10 and the
script runs.

Okay, checked it out and tried
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr/local --sysconfdir=/etc
resulting in
configure_files='./configure.ac'
....
want_pkg_config='true'
shift: 370: can't shift that many
I have just checked out the indexer-split branch and that command is
working fine and i can compile everything.
What version of automake (and other autotools) are you using? Maybe
there is the problem.
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.61
automake (GNU automake) 1.7.9
