I have a basic port of the search-tool to GIO in a Bazaar branch[1], if it's of any use to you. I don't know if the code is production-quality, but it could serve as a starting point. Also, it might be possible to get GIO-related patches accepted into the Ubuntu packages even without the rest of it being updated, so it will work properly.
