Michael, I'm not so much confidant with library localization, but from

        For use in a library, must include glib/gi18n-lib.h after
        defining the GETTEXT_PACKAGE macro suitably for your library:

        #define GETTEXT_PACKAGE "gtk20"
        #include <glib/gi18n-lib.h>

I'm going to merge your patch with this info..

Checked. It works. Simply replace gi18n.h with gi18n-lib.h in your
patch. The GETTEXT_PACKAGE define come from config.h

Using gi18n-lib.h the _() macro became

        #define _(String) dgettext (GETTEXT_PACKAGE, String)

so future external applications can use it with no i18n pain.

Great, including gi18n-lib.h instead of gi18n.h did the trick.

As you might have guessed, I'm not so familiar with localizing libraries myself.
One problem I currently see, is that the translations (the *.mo files)
are currently shipped in the tracker deb package. Now, with
libtracker-gtk I intend to add two new deb packages, libtracker-gtk0
and libtracker-gtk-dev, with libtracker-gtk0 depend on the tracker
package now, as it contains the translations.
I only see two possibilities here: Use a separate gettext domain for
libtracker-gtk, or resurrect tracker-data, and put the translations
there and have libtracker-gtk0 depend on tracker-data. What do you
think?

Now the real issue are bad messages (from a l10n point of view[1]) in
libtracker-gtk, in new tracker-search-tool and in tracker-preferences.

Here are a lot of malformed messages (markups, plurals, splitted
sentences). If you are right, it's better fix translatable strings
before add them to POTFILES.in. I'll report on this later

Jamie, njpatel et al. should review the strings in the source code and
then Jamie should commit the updated po/*.po files (make update-po).
As Jamie expressed his intention to release a new version soon, this
should be done asap to give translators some time to translate all the
new strings coming from t-p and libtracker-gtk.

I dont think the strings in there are frozen yet? njpatel?

(I believe he is adding email metadata to the tile which will need
translation)

As soon as I have confirmation of string freeze I will do so.

In the meantime do i need to apply your patch with just gi18n.h replaced
with gi18n-lib.h?

(me knows very little about translations!)
