Hi,
and sorry for posting again, but I think I found the
explanation for my issues and it is contained in the
following mysql-bug
http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=5396, which is closed
for the 4.x branch, but it seems that it is still
present on 5.x one.
The bug in itself clarifies, why I  have problems with
linking against libmysqld.a, in fact the bugs in
mysql_config are two it should not return the
--as-needed flag as well...
the comment from the mysql-developer possibly explains
the second issue, which I had:

Now embedded library can connect to the standalone
server (contains libmysql's
capabilities). So we just to add client libraries to
embedded linker's line

which probably shows another bug in mysql - trying as
failover (if the embedded server could not be
correctly initiallized) to connect to the server
running on the machine, but as this is a non-issue
with the current tracker, I'm not eager to explore
it:)
