As Jeff says, this is intentional. The sidebar is meant to mimic
Tomboy's tray menu.

Since this is tomboy-online-list, pretty sure Lance is using Tomboy
Online, so he can't muck with local_settings.py. ;-)

Yeah, any thoughts you have on how to make this more clear are welcome.
You can also search for notes directly from the sidebar.
