I think this may come useful, but I would really appreciate if you started
coding your backends with the style that time-conf.in follows. If you do
that, using the methods that network uses will come straightforward.

Most backends will eventually use the style that network, time, boot and
soon users have. This style has some overhead when starting a new backend,
and even more when learning how to code it, but it really pays as it is
easier to port new platforms with this.
