It looks like the fix was in after the last release, so I'll
wait for a release.
I tried building from source, got pretty far, defeated by gexiv2/exiv2 versioning

Similar to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=716418. It
looks a fix was implemented earlier this year in a development
version, so there may be a version you can download or update to in
your distribution to try the new feature.

A comment in that bug from 2013 listed some environment variables you
could set as a workaround; something similar may still work but I
haven't tried it in a long time.
