I ran into this issue myself. It's a bug in specific libtool 2.6 versions.
Dunno from which tree (stable/testing/unstable/experimental) you got yours,
but try with libtool 2.6 from all 4 (down/upgrade). After you switched versions
you should issue ./autogen.sh instead of ./configure
