Resize with hints + mplayer

I've only recently switched to sawfish, but I'm having one problem
that's rather annoying - sawfish isn't respecting the mplayer 'keep
aspect ratio' hints.

It is honoring terminal (xterm, gnome-term) 'resize in characters'
hints.   Is there something I have set wrong that's causing it?   I
have not changed my mplayer config since it was working in fvwm2.
