Gentoo/x86 here too. I use focus on click usually, but i've just tried
"enter-exit" and "enter-only", and I can confirm all what you said (the
later works, but not the former).  I'm using openoffice-bin-2.0.1 and 
sawfish-1.3.20050816-r1.
