preventing rygel from starting at boot time

1. I like the 'Gnome' desktop. Especially 'gnome-flashback', because of
it's small memory foot print.
2. I installed the entire 'Gnome desktop' on my system, mostly for the
applets and a few of the utility applications.
3. Unbeknownst to me 'rygel' was installed and set up to start at boot
time.
4. I use my system for communication and research, NOT entertainment.
5. After installing the 'Gnome desktop' on my system I noticed a
significant decease in performance, and a huge amount of IO
activity that I had NOT initiated.
6. I started investigating that performance degradation and
unauthorized, by myself, IO activity, as it seemed that, in spite
of all my efforts and clamav, that a virus had infected my system.
6. My investigations found that'rygel' is using an enormous amount of
IO, and possibly other resources as well.
7. I do NOT have a great deal of bandwidth.
8. Even if I had an unlimited amount of bandwidth, my preference would
be to allow SETI, or some scientific project inspired by it, to use
some of the bandwidth, NOT some sort of seemingly entertainment
oriented software. (Which, if necessary, I would want to be able to
start and stop as needed. i.e. Load, when needed, and entirely
remove from memory, when no longer needed.)
9. Removing 'rygel,' via Synaptic, will result in the removal of the
entire 'Gnome' desktop.
10. The'rygel' man page contains *nothing* about how prevent it from
being loaded at boot time.
11. Even 'rygel.conf' merely states …
[general]
# Set it to 'false' if you want to only use the streaming
part of Rygel and/or don't want it to advertize itself
on the UPnP network. If you want to completely disable
rygel, just don't run it then. :)
upnp-enabled=true
However, the neither the man page nor the 'rygel.conf' file states
HOW to '… just not run it …' even though the mere installation of
it, sets it up to automatically run at boot time.
Why am I being forced to either stop or get rid of something that sets
itself up to run at boot time, every time I start up my system, which I
do not want running on my system at all. Was installed without my
knowledge and hides. (Neither 'ps -A' nor 'top' show a process called
rygel or containing that string.)
How can I stop 'rygel' from running at boot time without putting 'rygel
--shutdown' into *startup applications*, which doesn't seem to work anyway.
