I suspect it just grabs the first URI, ignoring the transcoded ones and
tries to play that back. which would be really sad.

Yeah, sorry. that's a "bug" with gst-launch that is not easily fixable
without breaking DLNA compatibility. Basically the client is ignoring a
DLNA flag here.
