I suppose you don't have any error message or error number available?
What you can do is a) file a bug and b) attach a Wireshark trace of the
whole communication between the control app and Rygel. If you have a
working renderer at hand, also a trace of that, please.

That's a bit old, but OTOH the renderer hasn't changed that much IIRC.
You can upgrade to 0.10 by using
https://launchpad.net/~cszikszoy/+archive/upnp, our semi-official PPA.
Have you tried with a different renderer if you have one available?
Unfortunately there are not much FOSS renderers around. If you have a
Windows 7 installation, WMP 12 is quite ok.
