This sounds similar to the problem with apple using a user agent check
before streaming the media, and trying to pass a web page when the user
agent check fails:

The web site referred to above may be doing something similar. On my
system (Ubuntu jaunty), the codec search is being prompted by the totem
mozilla plugin, not rhythmbox.
