Can we get a hard code freeze exception for the patch here?

The bug is experienced on Debian and Ubuntu systems at least and we have 
confirmation that the patch fixes the problem for some users who were 
originally reporting it.

The patch is a workaround in nature, but at this point it is almost 
certainly the best approach.
