I'd like to apply the one-line patch in:
http://bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=184196
to gnome-shell. This is the most trivial possible change to GNOME
to try and address the input method situation as I described in:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/release-team/2011-March/msg00064.html
There's the obvious downside of having a legacy icon in the status
area if IBus is started accidentally for a user who doesn't understand
or need input methods, but I think that's a serious problem whether
the icon appears on the top panel or in the message tray. And this
should definitely improve the situation for the group of users that
need input methods.
See:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=641531#c23
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=641531#c25
for changes being made upstream on the IBus side to work properly with
this.
