Low-risk code-freeze break for Evolution

Since breaking code freeze is all the rage these days...

I'd like permission to backport a cosmetic but very noticeable fix from
git master which addresses Evolution's status bar constantly resizing by
a few pixels as status messages fly by.  I just know we're gonna get a
ton of bug reports about it if it slips into 3.0.
