I usually set up external dependencies as milestones, since like you said,
they have no duration or other info... just a due date.

If you right click on a task and bring up the Edit Task dialog box, you'll
find a check box to mark the task as a milestone.  There's also a check box
for fixed duration in that dialog and other goodies as well.
