Thanks, Colin. That gets me much further with a fresh installation on
Mageia 3, which loads the kernel, mounts the drive and stops at the
point of reaching the target graphical interface (without launching
it).

However, F18 and openSUSE (I'm running the -devel tree everywhere)
fail in a similar manner to before:

dracut Warning: /sysroot/ostree/gnome/current has no proper rootfs,
layout, ignoring and removing offending mount hook
dracut Warning: Can't mount root filesystem
