Thank you, Joanie - perhaps this is one that could be taken up after
your more than well deserved holidays. Interestingly, if you use
Alt-Escape rather than Alt-Tab to switch windows, the issue does not
occur.

The difference (according to the MATE keyboard bindings dialogue) is
that Alt-Tab switches windows with a popup shown, whereas Alt-Escape
doesn't use the popup window.
