Re: [orca-list] Minimal Linux Version

Even a mini Slint weighs 2.1G. It speaks on the console but no X, so no orca.
Forget Slint for that, Jude.

It will make it unattractive to users in here, but what would use of xfce

A long time ago, zipslack was available and it could be installed on a
series of floppy disks and used 100Mb of disk space once installed. That
probably got discontinued by now since its slackware version if memory
serves the last time I had contact with it was something in the 9.0 10.0
range.

Yes, but would not fit in 250 mb at all.

If it was me, I'd try a "manual" install of debian. Run through the steps to
install Debian by typing them in yourself. There a about eleventy gazillion
web pages out there on how to do this but the main steps are:
1. Partition the drive
2. Mount the root partition and run debootstrap on it
3. chroot into the place you mounted the root partition
4. Install a kernel
5 Install/configure grub
6. Create certain essential files like /etc/fstab, /etc/resolv.conf and
others.

You'll have to google for more details. This will leave you with an absolutely
minimalist Debian install. It won't even have locate or finger. I am going to
WAG it at 200Mb. It *might* fit into 250Mb.

Hi,
I'm working on an old computer for the Ham shack, and I found an iomega zip
drive with a 250 mb disk.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a minimal Linux, preferably Debian based,
that would fit on that 250 zip drive, and I could install Speakup or Orca
onto it.
I was looking at Puppy Linux, but there are so many of those to choose from.
I don't know if a server version would fit on 250 mb.
Thanks.
