Re: [orca-list] problem using xclip on a regular tty

I am logging in by gdm rather than startx, but its the same user as
the regular tty.

Willem is correct. The DISPLAY variable needs to be set as the user that
opened the X session. If there's some way to make it global, I don't
know what that his.

I start my graphical desktop that eventually brings up Orca using startx
from a tty where I'm logged in as janina. Thereafter, I can use my xclip
aliases in any tty where janina is the logged in user. I have just
confirmed that this will break if janina does a 'sudo -i,' so it is very
much tied to the logged in user who started X.

John,
You must be the same user iI think.
I.E. startx as user john in one tty and in another, log in as john.
Then do export DISPLAY=:0
Then:
echo 'some string'|xclip -i
What to do in X itself, follow Janina's instructions, as you might have
gathered, I am no gui guru.

I am trying to get data from the speakup clipboard to the X
clipboard. If I do
xclip -i <string>
it says cannot open display. If I do
DISPLAY=:0;xclip -i <string> I get the following error:
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyError: Can't open display: :0

How can I get this to work, or is it impossible?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
