It's easy to install Mate from the terminal but it's also easy to grab
the Mate iso so really it's up to you which you prefer doing really.
Either install it or reinstall Ubuntu Mate, I'm not sure offhand how
well Gnome/Mate play well together however.

Thanks for the reply.
Is it an easy fix to just apt-get install mate or must one download
the entire mate iso image?
Net connection isn't an issue here; 11.3 Mb/s.

Hey Eric, if I may, I'd suggest the Mate desktop for your
Ubuntu needs honestly. Which desktops are you using currently? I
noticed Unity but either didn't catch or you didn't say which one you
use for Mint.
Also, agree on the v18 is better part, it runs like a dream once you
get Gnome3 set up, though Mate/XFCE/etc all run perfectly well on
older machines. I'd argue if anything 18.X has done a lot to get
people interested, despite a rocky launch for their main Ubuntu
branch and the issues leading up to 18's launch.
Eric, word of advice about Orca. Don't be afraid to play around in
learn mode. Don't be afraid to do an orca --replace from time to
time, either.

Hi Eric,
For Ubuntu 18.04 see:

Some tips:
after starting Ubuntu 18.04 press Control+Alt+Escape to land on the
Desktop.
Control+Alt+Tab takes you to the top bar on the upper right of the
screen, with Arrow right to the System menu and Arrow Down to the
several options for WiFi etc.
Succes.

I have downloaded, installed 2 different distros of linux and had
little success with orca.
First, linux mint. In this environment, little is read within the
menues, e.g. press the super key (windows). Also, alt f1 doesn't do
much.
Second, ubuntu v18 is slightly better (stock install), with small
issues. as of old documentation as of the v14 and v16 docs (last
success I had was v16, the super key braught up the unity dash.
type in web browser and a match would come up; this does indeed
happen. The issue is that alt f10 and alt f1 don't do much; not
totally sure of the alt f10 though.
Any help, links and documentation and or better distros I might run
sure would help. I desire a form of linux that has codex for
media, mp3, cd/dvd burning etc.
Thanks
Eric
