Hi,
I use Ubuntu 17.10 and I tried Mate by installing:
sudo apt install mate-desktop-environment
After I could chose just like the way you described.
Personally I like the GNOME2 desktop I installed by:
sudo apt install gnome-session-flashback
Success

Hello. I am running Ubuntu 17.04. I installed the Mate desktop by doing apt-get install mate.
I tried to switch to Mate by doing the following:
When the logon screen comes up, press Enter on my name.
Type my password in.
Tab until I get to the menu to choose session.
Press Enter.
I would think this would be a menu, so I up and down arrow. When I do this, I get no speech.
Since this menu appears not to be accessible, how can I switch the session from Gnome to Mate?
