Right, and I've read some got it working with chromium --enable-speech-dispatcher as a command line for running chromium too.

It used to be the case that on Debian based distributions you needed to run ChromeVox and not Chromium. By default, Chromium wasn't compiled with the proper support to run ChromeVox. I don't know if this is still the case or not.
