Re: [orca-list] Configuring LightDM

Howdy,
I tend to like a session manager because then everything can be handled by systemd. Normally I use slim with
autologin so that it is similar to startx but you don't have to disable the console screen reader, Fenrir in
my case, and you get X on TTY 7.
Slim doesn't work in this situation though, because the computer I am configuring has multiple users, most of
which have vision. However, I do the system administration and it would be nice to have a talking desktop,
including login.
Thanks

Hi.

Is there some special reason for using a display manager? Currently, I'm using a custom session on Arch with startx and xinitrc and I've found it lighter and easier to deal with. Basically, espeakup starts on the boot and I use it to login with my user on the virtual console. Afterwards I disable the espeakup and type startx to start my Mate session (in my case I start Emacs alongside the session). The advantage of this approach is that the display manager becomes unnecessary and you can quickly continue on the virtual console after the logon if you need to do some administrative task that doesn't require a GUI at all. Further more, you don't need to care about Orca starting on the login screen and you can easily configure a list of programs to start with your session, regardless the desktop environment that you have chosen.

Howdy,
Thanks for the link, I hadn't found that before. Unfortunately, it is Debian specific while I run Arch Linux, and I'm not sure how to get it working on arch. I think mainly the problem is, the file:
/usr/bin/orca-dm-wrapper
Does not exist. I could create the file of course, but I have no idea what goes in it. The errors seem to be related to at-spi not being launched. So, I wonder how I could tell it to start at-spi? Also, I wonder why managers like slim do it by default?
Thanks

I am playing around with session managers. I have heard that lightdm can be configured to launch orca at the login screen. I installed it and did
what I thought was the correct configuration with the gtk greeter.

Have you followed these instructions ? https://wiki.debian.org/accessibility#lightdm_accessibility

Further more, orca will not start while
in mate either.

What is your environment (distro, mate version, orca version) ? How do you run Orca ? Are you using the alt+win+s keyboard shortcut ? If you install Debian with braille or speech when you check Mate as desktop everything will be correctly configured automatically.

When tryuing to run it from the terminal, there is a
long list of errors, I'm not sure what they are because there's no
screen reader, and I had a very young helper reading lol.

You could use the TTY to check what's happening.

Best regards.
