Re: [orca-list] Use Linux as a daily driver

Thanks. Good to know.

Is the links to Orca documentation in the footer updated?

I have a lot of reading ahead of me to learn Orca and Ubity, GNOME and
Mate keyboard shortcuts.
How to navigate the Linux desktop environment as a keyboard/screen
reader user etc.

It's always a good idea to read the latest and recently updated docs.

Thanks,

-Øyvind

Hello,

Standard gmail interface i.e. the one you will get on your first login to
gmail is working fine with orca and Firefox.
It's a good idea to read google's online help to discover their keyboard
shortcuts to be a bit more productive than by using tab and shift+tab and
arrow keys only but it for sure can be done. I don't know these shortcut
keys my self but I find gmail web interface to be working great.

Greetings

Hi all:

I want to give Linux a chance as a daily driver.
I have a workstation that I can use for testing out different Linux
distros.
If all goes well I'd love to switch to Linux as my main OS on my laptop
as well.

It's mainly possible. I do this.

My requirements:

* Using the web is important.
I particularly need to use banking and the gmail interface.

* Email - see above.
I use the Gmail standard view to manage my email and it works great on
Windows with Firefox and NVDA.
Of course I can go back to use a email client like Thunderbird if Orca
does not handle the gmail interface to my satisfaction.
However, I really prefer the webmail approach.

No problem, provided that you use the legacy webmail interface, instead
of the modern one.

* Use the terminal effectively; especially remote admin work via ssh.

* OCR
I currently use ABBYY FineReader on Windows and it's a great solution.

It's not great on Linux. Some tools exist, e.g. Lios, etc, related to
tesseract engine, but it's clearly not extraordinary.

Why not dualboot to deal with this? With a shared folder between your
Win and Linux?

Regards,

How well does Linux/Orca perform with the above requirements?

Thanks,

-Øyvind
