There are a couple of distros that can get you up and talking with the
MATE desktop. Best for your hardware situation may be Ubuntu-MATE
http://ubuntu-mate.org/
It doesn't run GNOME as other known accessible distros do, and it
doesn't run Unity as Ubuntu itself does, although it is still Ubuntu in
every other way, just with the MATE desktop. Hope this helps.
