Re: [orca-list] starting to use linux again

I'm not sure what is meant by Vinux not being updated sufficiently. Vinux 4 is based on Ubuntu 12.04 which is still supported and getting security updates. Vinux 5, which is in beta, is based on Ubuntu 14.04, which is also still supported.

If you're primary need is for ssh access to other machines, I don't

You'll should choose a distro that keeps its security code up to date,
kernel, openssh, etc. To my mind this puts vinux out, as it isn't update
sufficiently.

You should also run denyhosts to help mitigate attacks against your own
machine.

I still use Fedora, though installing from scratch isn't the same as in
years past. Easiest path may be to get help with the install from
someone sighted.

You can pretty much take the install defaults, except that I strongly
suggest putting your /home on a separate partition.

If I were not using Fedora, I believe Arch would be my second choice
today. I especially like the documentation Arch provides.

Sorry, forgot to put this in my first email.

If someone could update me on what is out there. I've looked at vinux, but
is that the best out there? My needs are fairly simple. I need to admin
some unix servers. I am not a huge fan of current ssh windows clients
either GUI, or command prompt. I can't stand the cursor tracking. I need
to be able to edit files remotely etc, and have the speech keep up with me.
In years past, I used a box with fedora w/ speakup. I don't want to put a
huge amount of work into getting this working for my needs, but some work is
ok.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: starting to use linux again

Hi All,

I've been on this list for quite a long time, and it has been a while.

I what to know what is the best distro I can get to provide accessibility?
I'd like orca in gnome, and if it is still possible, speakup on the console.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
