Just for your Information (if not already known):
you have to do that in many more applications in gnome like in epiphany (the browser) or evince (the pdf viewer) because its mostly not default why ever.

maybe could you share your impressions of evolution :). I'm just interested in.

If I press enter or f6 from the message list, then it seems that the focus moves into the body of the message, but orca is silent if I try to use the cursor keys to read anything, although pressing tab moves me from link to link.
