Much of the configuration of an Arch system is fairly straightforward
and defaults are generally kept sane. Of course the graphical
configuration applications such as gnome/mate-control-center and
system-config-printer also work as expected. There is rarely a need to
manually edit a lot of configuration files even in Arch these days. It's
mainly the installation of a base Arch system that requires most of the
configuration editing and use of individual install scripts along with
applications such as f/gdisk or parted. Once that is done, keeping the
system running is far less daunting, and even package management is far
easier from the graphical desktop, since packagekit is being integrated
into GNOME, and can also be used effectively with MATE or any other
desktop that can run Orca. So whereas I prefer flexibility that allows
me to install to a flash drive as if it were a USB hard disk and put a
compressed btrfs filesystem with subvolumes for /home, /var and /usr
onto the installation, which are things either not found or not
implemented properly in most graphical or automated installers, other
Arch users who just want a solid base operating system that can be
quickly installed with lots of freedom of choice from an application and
desktop standpoint may still appreciate something a bit easier to use at
the cost of some flexibility.
