[orca-list] some oddities in gnome's core application menus

hi all
I'm writing in to report some odd behavior in gnome's take on an app
menu. Orca works fine with these for the most part, so this isn't an
"orca doesn't work" post. There are, however, a couple of strange
issues I can't seem to understand. Most of gnome's menus aren't
presented as a menu to orca. That is, when opening them, orca often
says something like "pressed. open push button" instead of "menu. Open
1 of 10." This is probably a semantic issue, gnome isn't presenting
the correct roll type to pyatspi or something. I've also noticed a
post on the vinux list that said gnome broke keyboard shortcuts. They
didn't, but they did break orca's ability to present the shortcuts in
some menus but not all. Example. Set focus to the desktop and press
f10. A menu will show up, and orca will announce, "new folder push
button." If I use the where am I keyboard shortcut orca announces, new
folder push button. Alt+f. My questions are, is it possible to have
orca announce these menus as menus? I know I'm entering a menu, but
new users might not. Sometimes, pressing f10 moves you not to a menu,
but a toolbar, such as in gnome boxes, but orca doesn't announce
this. Second, this may not be an orca issue, but is it possible to
restore the announcement of keyboard shortcuts, if the option is
enabled in orca's preferences? A common theme in gnome is to have very
generic names for menus. Opening a menu will often cause orca to
simply announce "menu" or "window", which isn't very informative. Ok,
I've opened a menu, but which menu? I can file bugs against gnome if
needed. Now for more coffee.
Thanks
Kendell clark
