I'd say more than "a bit." And no apologies needed.

I've been given some advice on profiling tools I can use to hunt this
down and will start there later this morning. As you may have seen, I
also filed a bug with the details you provided on the list:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=709625. Right now, it's filed
against Orca. We can transfer it once we figure out what the <insert
swear word here> is going on.

I'll also look into the Thunderbird 24 issue which is almost certainly
not the same as the aforementioned bug.
