Install poppler-utils and use pdftotext or pdftohtml to convert the PDF file
to text or HTML, respectively. For example
pdftotext -layout filename.pdf
or for columnar material
pdftotext -raw filename.pdf
The -enc ASCII7 option can be useful for documents in English as it will
convert ligatures in certain fonts to the corresponding letters.
