Re: [orca-list] Debugging a Broken Orca

Yeah, it sure isn't useful This is the worst Orca experience I've had
over the years. I can't seem to capture any output from the thing.
Orca 3.6.3 works fine in the same gnome session but as soon as I
update Orca to the git version, I get silence and when I try to run
from the gnome run dialog, I can't get it to start. When I tried
running it from a terminal session, to do a 'orca --replace' seemed to
ignore the command. I was doing the --replace because when I updated
the orca package, 3.6.3 was still running and working. I figured I
would have some access to work with before losing speech access to
gnome.

I think before I close out this message, I will try and run orca from
a base console just to see if any informative errors come
out. Hopefully this might reveal something.

Otherwise I will have to sit and keep using 3.6 until the 3.8 stuff
gets promoted to production.

Do I absolutely have to rebuild all the a11y stack to get any of this
to work?

Depending on the kind of the error that he is getting.
If orca is not starting because some error related to
infra-structure happens, the --debug option will be not useful.
Thanks.

orca --debug
then you get a file called debug_xxxxxxx.out

Hi.
I do not know what could be wrong, but I am running orca generated
from git without problems.
Do not know if it matters, but I also recompiled atk, at-SPI2-atk and
at-SPI2-core from git.

Do you can login to your machine even without speech?
If possible, activate a terminal session and type:

orca 1>errors.1 2>erros.2

The messages related to the errors should be placed in that files.
Thanks.

I have successfully built an arch Linux package for Orca from git but
before anyone gets excited about the build script, it is broken!
Compiled OK with automake 1.12 and speech-dispatcher 0.8 works OK when
I test with 'spd-say' from a command line using Speakup. Problem is
when I start up gnome with 'startx', I get silence. No speech at all.
I cannot find the log files for Orca anymore; I used to have a
directory in my $HOME called .orca but I think that went away with
older versions so at this point, I don't know where or how to find any
debug output to see what is wrong. I fell back to Orca 3.6.3 from
normal Arch repos and it appears to be working again.

So can anyone get me up to speed on how to debug orca now days? Also,
with both the production and git versions, I tried to run 'orca
--version' from a text console, thinking I would get some output in
the form of version information or something and in both cases, I got
trace back with different information from each version of the
program. I can include those in a later post if desired.

Anyway, I'm down for the count right now when it comes to running a
git version of Orca on my current up to date Arch Linux box.
